Holly Leafminer Larva

Phytomyza vomitoriae, a leafminer infesting vomitoria holly, Ilex vomitoriae. Vomitoria holly is often infested in the nursery and landscape by this leafminer. This fly lays its eggs in the leaves of vomitoria holly and the larvae then feed inside the leaf tissue causing the characteristic mine. Vomitoria holly covered in nurseries with the winter protective material "blunk" often are heavily attacked by this leafminer in late winter and early spring. Landscape plants are also attacked but the damage is usually not severe enough to control. This leafminer is heavily attacked by parasitoid wasps which greatly suppress leafminer populations.
