Tuliptree Scale

The tuliptree scale, Toumeyella liriodendri (Gmelin), can be found on Linden, tulip poplar and magnolia. Infestation can cause weakened condition of plants and reduces vigor and growth. Heavy infestations may kill trees, young trees and branches on older trees. The female scale is hemispherical and dark chocolate brown in color. Usually the scales are symmetrical, but shape varies in crowded populations. Immature stages complete development in spring, mature, and give live birth in late August. The old females then fall from the plant.
