Southern Red Mite

The southern red mite, Oligonychus illicis (McGregor). This mite has an oval-shaped body and is about 1/50 inch in length. It is purplish or reddish and more translucent towards the front end of the body. The male is smaller and more narrow toward the rear-end of the body.

Common host plants: Prefers azalea, but also infests elaeagnus, camellia, hibiscus, hollies, junipers, pyracantha, photinia and viburnum.
